I’m sure many of you have discovered the remarkably useful tool that is ChatGPT and its ability to source information faster and in a more useful way than simply “Googling” a question. I have recently discovered that mine can actually hear me and has on occasion asked me a question, unprompted. Well, this is the start of Agentic AI which was highlighted by Ben Rogoff, lead manager of the Polar Capital Technology Trust, in his annual investment manager’s report.
Agentic AI is a system that doesn’t just answer questions – it makes decisions on your behalf and without the need for human input. Instead of telling you the weather, it can check your calendar, notice you have arranged a picnic, see rain is forecast and reschedule the picnic for you without being asked. It will be able to book gym sessions, doctor’s appointments or trips to the hairdressers based on your availability and preferences. It can reschedule meetings if you are running late or rebook flights if there’s a delay or cancellation. It will order groceries when it notices you are running low and not only seek out discounts but recommend ways to save if it feels you have spent too much one month.
Agentic AI bridges the gap between Large Language Models (LLM) that can understand and generate human language and human agency, the ability of a human to make choices and action. Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI , thinks we are just a few thousand days away from such systems coming into operation – Elon Musk believes AI will supersede human intelligence by the end of this year.
OpenAI’s Operator provides our first real glimpse into a world where AI is no longer a tool used by humans, but instead performs tasks previously done by humans.
